It is the first, the mother of a successful dynasty. With its many virtues and a few minor "teething troubles" typical of its youth, the 1965 911 embodies the true DNA that Porsche has carried forward in its flagship model for over 60 years. It is a genuine GT: a sports car suitable for daily driving that could also be taken racing on the weekend. "From the theater to the track," as the advertising slogan went.
I have personally had my eye on this specific car for over 15 years. I fell in love with it when a friend was selling it; I wanted to buy it because I already owned a Solex-carbs 911 2.0 that I enjoyed driving, though mine had been poorly restored and lacked its original color scheme. By the time I managed to sell mine, it was too late to buy this Dolphin Grey 911: it had already ended up in the garage of its current owner, who has now - after 15 years - entrusted me with selling it. History has a way of coming full circle!
This 911 rolled off the assembly line in April 1965, produced for the Italian market in Dolphin Grey paired with a green interior - a rare and highly elegant combination. Its only optional extra was the Webasto auxiliary heater.
Unfortunately, when the car was restored in the 1990s, the materials needed to refurbish the green interior were unavailable (though they are today). Consequently, the upholsterer, Ferraresi, proposed the setup currently installed: black vinyl with black-and-white houndstooth fabric. a combination that was although period-correct.
The 130 horsepowers of the six cylinders engine deliver more than enough power to provide unexpected thrills during both spirited driving and highway cruising; thanks to its signature Solex carburetors, the car feels remarkably lively. The 901 gearbox - featuring the classic "dog-leg" first gear - has also been fully opened and rebuilt. The suspension setup, paired with 4.5-inch wheels, makes this 911 one of the most entertaining and agile cars to drive on mixed, winding roads; it is the kind of 911 you never want to stop driving.
As mentioned earlier, I owned one of these for a long time and used it almost as a daily driver with great satisfaction. This Dolphin Grey 911 evokes the same sensations I experienced behind the wheel of my own car, while retaining all the unique characteristics of the earliest production models. It is finished in an exterior color that - in my opinion - is one of the finest in the palette; combined with the green-faced gauges, chrome wheels, and original black license plates, this example is truly unique.
One of the defining features of the 1965 911 2.0 is its interior: as said, the green-faced instruments and wood-rimmed steering wheel are hallmarks of the first two years of production. These elements are complemented by comfortable seats trimmed in a mix of vinyl and fabric, ensuring a pleasant ride even in summer, and velour carpeting, creating a cabin that feels familiar to enthusiasts of the model yet possesses distinctly rare and special qualities. We will not dwell on the specific details visible in the photos—details that were also noted and appreciated by the "Registro Italiano Porsche 911" inspectors. We mention just a few to illustrate how the early 1965 models differ from later production runs: non-adjustable shock absorber towers, a windshield washer reservoir located in the wheel arch behind the tower, and a dashboard wood trim piece mounted openly with beveled edges.
The "Registro Italiano Porsche 911" homologation certificate, the complete chronological history report, the ASI "Gold Plate" (*Targa Oro*) certification, and the standard equipment are all available.
The car appeared on the article for the 2023 Porsche 911 Buyer's guide by Ruoteclassifche and can be viewed in Bologna by appointment.
